First Art’s Byron Busk

in support of Byron Festival, Hucknall

July - August 2017

In 2016, First Art filled the streets, cafes, trams and open spaces of Hucknall with art, poetry, music and light for the first ever Byron Busk – in support of the Byron Festival - celebrating the travels of the great poet and his final resting place at St Mary Magdalene Church. For 2017, we are building on the success by bringing a series of events to the town throughout July and August.

Music in Quiet Spaces – St Mary Magdalene Church

Friday, 14th July, 2 pm – 4 pm

Classical music and poetry in an iconic setting - in partnership with Byron Festival.

Visit the church for music from the all-female Highly Strung String Quartet - a professional, vibrant quartet with an eclectic playlist mixing classical music with lighter numbers, jazz and popular repetoire, and an organ recital by Tony Herrod.

The players will be accompanied by live poetry.

Drop in and enjoy the whole programme, or just pop in for a few minutes – it’s up to you.

Byron Festival Award Evening at John Gobder Centre + Launch of The People’s Poetry

Friday, 14th July, time TBC

We will be joining our friends at the Byron Festival for their festival awards evening, to launch The People’s Poetry.

Continuing our mission of shining a light on the First Art area, we will be asking you to find your inner poet, and describe the people and places of our area – in your own words. We want you to send us poems, for your chance to be part of the People’s Poetry exhibitions – which will be published in the local press, and on our own web platforms during National Poetry Week.

We will release details of how (and what) to submit later in the year, so please keep checking the website and social media channels for updates.

First Art’s Takeaway Poetry Event – Hucknall Market

Saturday, 5th August

For the second year running, we will be celebrating Lord Byron in his home town of Hucknall. We have invited the Takeway Poetry team to Hucknall Market Place. Takeaway Poetry is the ‘world’s first mobile poetry emporium - staffed by a rotating cast of poets, it serves up free, bespoke, make-to-order verse in ten minutes or less. All orders include a one-on-one performance as well as a handwritten serving in branded packaging (open or wrapped).’

On the day there will also be a selection of food stalls and other entertainment. Pop along, say hello and grab your poem.

The 19th Annual Byron Festival will happen between Friday, 7th July and Friday, 14th July 2017

It is a celebration of Byron in Venice, it’s carnival time!
